University lab services are pretty reasonable for many things these days. Anyone know of a lab that does mail-in or drop off trichninella testing of meat? I don't know enough about the testing process to know how carefully (and chilly) samples need to be handled. MT of course does the testing upon check in for bears. WY does not, since it does not require retainer of the meat. I tried some googling to little avail. The state dept of ag has meat testing services but the website is less than user friendly.
Thanks

MT DOL is who FWP used to use - I believe FWP stopped collecting trich samples from checked animals a couple years ago. You can submit your own through DOL. Cost is $80.

Alternatively, you can send it to WSVL if you want to stay in state. They don’t have a price list online, but you can call and get the cost. Find and fill out the accession form on their website.

You are the “owner” in this case, so put all of your information there. Leave the vet stuff blank. Clinical history info would just be “hunter harvested animal” in your case. Fill in the species and sample submitted (usually tongue for trich). Under the Parasitology section select “Other” and write in Trichinosis. If they have questions, they’ll call you.

Parasitology is best with samples that have been refrigerated but not frozen; however if it’s going to be more than 3 or so days before you submit it, freeze it so it doesn’t start to autolyze. Ship it with one of those blue or synthetic ice packs to keep it cool. No real (wet) ice allowed. Shipping instructions are here:

The labs are always picky about packaging, rightly so. No one likes to open a package filled with leaking god-knows-what disease.

Thanks, that's precisely the info I was after. I didn't realize MT had stopped testing.
