My brother and cousin came out this past fall. I turned them loose on state land, but they were struggling pretty bad, so I decided to take them to a honey hole and put my brother on a nice buck. He usually always borrows my rifle when he comes out, but I wanted him to start taking some ownership of his own hunting this year and told him to bring his own rifle. He said he was going to borrow one, which I advised against, but he went ahead and did it anyway. Turned out to be a total disaster. It was an AR platform in 6 arc and it wouldn't cycle until I monkeyed with it, and then it would only feed from the magazine when manually, but would not feed on the second shot. Total disaster. He never fired it to make sure it was on and just took the guys word for it. My cousin has a sweet custom rifle build, which was pretty dead nuts. However, neither of them seemed to understand the importance of ranging in the open plains, and the hunt kind of was a disaster from the start. It was pretty comical, but I hope they learn some good lessons. My brother and I had to have a little heart-to-heart after the hunt, but I thought I'd shared it as it just highlights the need to come prepared on a western big game hunt. They're actually decent hunters and have both killed lots of deer in the Midwest, but this type of hunting is obviously very different when you're not used to it. Hopefully you guys can get a little bit of enjoyment out of the whole debacle!
