My wife and I finished building our dream house and the best subcontractor we worked with through the entire process was our landscaper.

As a thank you for his amazing work, I wanted to take him catfishing for several reasons including primarily the fact that we could fit it in on a weeknight after work despite it being his busy season. Plus catfishing is also conducive to enjoying along with beer and cigars.

We started the evening with glass of Pappy Van Winkle. It’s a long story on its own so I’ll save that for another post.

We met a buddy of mine who catfishes tournaments and has a good setup for it and were in the water by 6:30pm. We were pumped and quickly went to our first spot. We threw out 9 lines, made sandwiches, lit cigars, and cracked some drinks. We excitedly chatted and watched the rod tips closely. Not a single bite.

The lake we fished has plenty of wakeboard and waverunner traffic up to sunset so we were stuck fishing the no wake inlets. No bite. After the sun went down we motored down to the dam and fished the deep water. We got a few bites, but no hookups. 11pm rolls around and we make the call to fish our way back to the ramp and we watch the finder for fish along the way.

About half way back we hit a spot on the lake where two channels merged and the fish were stacked in there. We quickly dropped anchor and getting our lines out. Before we could get them all out, rod tips started bending over it was 12:05am. For the next hour and a half we boated 10 fish. The smallest was just under 7 and the largest just over 15.

We made it back to the ramp at 2:30am. By the time we got out of the water and drove home it was late. At 3:45am I fell asleep knowing I had to get up in 3 hours for work and had 100lbs of fish to clean. But it was worth it!

Awesome that you were able to arrange such an outing for the subcontractor. And then you were able to find a plethora of big ones was icing on the catfish cake.
