Gratuitous Bird and Dog Photos

I havn't introduced him to gunfire yet. He's a little timid of new noises, for example if I start the truck he seems scared for a few seconds, so I'm gonna take it slow. I have had him out in the tall grass, and my wife and I have worked on quartering in areas where we could run into some wild birds. I'm really looking forward to the 2025 season!
Take him to the local trap range with his favorite toy and treats. Play in the truck, in the parking lot behind the guns and if he is good with that roll down the windows a bit. If he is good with that take him out of the truck on lead and play some more. If he is good with that start working very slowly towards the line. But keep it fun and games. Back up if he gets edgy.

Maverick and I took a walk up a canyon not far from town this morning. He found a pheasant and the old Remington 32 brought it down handily. We're both pretty pleased about that!

Happy Guy & Maverick right now. Happy Thanksgiving all.

They’ve earned it.
They have, a few years ago when I was still guiding they would have 1000 + retrieves during the season. Both have joint injuries beyond repair, we’ve tried. On the job injuries resulting in just over 10 k in vet bills. Now we go out to a small piece of public ground, 2 hours at the most. If we’re lucky we get one or two birds. If we
Are real lucky we will get out twice in a week if they are not too lame.
Forgot my phone this morning. Dogs did fine, we got into some Huns. I was one for four, they are pissed at me.

you shot his head clean off!

Head is tucked under the body. A pellet nailed him in the head and it was a bloody mess... so it stayed out of the photograph. :)

Soon as dog brought me the bird I thought "no photos of head-shot bird"

BTW, in deference to the 90 year old gun I use bismuth shot. Not allowed to use lead shot where I hunt. That bismuth stuff is expensive but it sure smacks 'em down.

I was hoping for a picture of young Dusty with pheasants today, but trained pheasant actors are expensive to hire for a photo shoot, and shooting pheasants from the sky did not seem to be in the cards either. So, we will settle for this picture of Dusty on the catwalk of a water control structure we had to cross twice. It was about 12 ft above the iced-over outflow. He was not a fan of this despite all the log walking we had done when he was a pup. The first time across, he went between my knees with my hand on his collar. The second time he went on his own with a lot of coaxing. He had is claws dug into the grate like a cat on cashmere, but he did it. Next time, this will be a lot easier.
