I got an old Rhinehart deer target for free this past spring that was a model without a replaceable core. It was already shot out so I rebuild it the first time using two layers of pretty dense foam sheet for center filler and Great Stuff gaps and cracks for the rest. It held up well with almost daily shooting for 6 months including some fixed broadhead shooting.

This time I am using 10 layers of foam floor mat you can get at Home Depot as a core with a few layers of landscaping cloth sandwiched between for a core, and then the Great Stuff fire block foam as it is more dense than the gaps and cracks foam.
I wrapped the deer in plastic wrap really well and then poked a few holes to get the straw in to fill it up. I’ll update late on how this holds up compared to the first method.

All cured up and took some shots at it in various places. I’ll rate the arrow stoppage as “acceptable”. Arrow removal is pretty easy.
550 grain, 20% FOC, out of a 28” draw 60# Bear single cam rated at 320 IBO.

Whosoever did that to the 3D target in the picture above is a hell of a trainer. The pics is a motivation to me. I got my 3D broadhead target recently and if i ever get to this level, i have found a better way to rebuild.

The target was pretty shot out when I got it. I rebuilt it once and then proceeded to shoot it almost daily for 6 months with my recurve. It was getting shot out again and now I have a compound I’m shooting almost daily, so time for the second rebuild.

So far the fire block foam is holding up well. I’m going to try to not shoot broadheads through it much, and maybe unscrew them before removing the arrow. Pulling the broadheads back out through the foam is what really tears it up.
