Incredible. It looks like it's going to swim away!

    Chamber Empty or Loaded

Just last seasone my buddy had one chambered, gun on safe. Threw the sling over his shoulder and BANG! it's one of those one in a million where his safety got bumped and trigger got caught on what must have been pack straps. After that, I hesitate to chamber until I'm really hunting.

    Curious About Self - Tuning

Hey thanks! I'm up Kalispell way but I do come down on occasion. I would happily take you up on it if things line up on my next trip down.

    How tight a group?

My take is don't go out with a setup you don't have confidence in. Logically, there is a point where it's "good enough" but I finally hit that spot with my weapon and ammo this year where I really felt confident with it (300 win mag. 200 gr eld/x, .6" @ 100 prone from a hunting pack). It helped...

    Curious About Self - Tuning

I probably should have said "service," tune was a poor choice of words. I would really like to be able to work on my own setup like you mentioned above without the lead time. I admit I am coming in with somewhat limited experience about bow service, but I don't see that as an excuse for not...

    Curious About Self - Tuning

That's a great point. I do broadhead tune and fiddle with my basic setup, I'm sure i could do more without getting a press. Maybe I'm just a little star struck when they can toss the bow in a press, drop in a new peep or string damper, or give a quick cable adjustment and be on their merry way...

    Curious About Self - Tuning

I am pondering whether to take the path of servicing & tuning my own equipment. I have been content in the past to take them to a local shop but the service has gone downhill, leaving me kicking around the idea of getting my own press. For those who have made the leap, was it worth it? Or am I...

    First youth hunting rifle?

Another vote for .243. An excellent round that will get the job done with minimal recoil.

It’s a 5-point Mule Deer, change my mind

I've always figured this would be the most sensible way to settle the argument. Where did the argument about eyeguards even came from in the first place? Anyone know? I'm genuinely curious.

    What's On Your Phone?

As I topped out on a ridge I could see a wildfire in its early beginnings slowly filling the valley with smoke. It left an impression on me so I snapped this photo.

    8 years after back injury

Love this. I've been in the same boat (low back injury and then a busted neck with partial upper body paralysis 2 years later.) It's a real test of grit to push through it and come out the other side, but I don't know if I would have it any other way looking back. It makes that crisp air among...

Hornady ELX - No Good for Hunting Elk???

I shot my bull this year with 200 gr ELDX from my .300 win mag. He went down almost immediately. Clipped the front shoulder slightly but had no issues putting him down. There wasn't really much left of the heart, which was comforting about the rapidity of the kill but a bummer since it can be so...

New Rangefinder Sig Sauer, Leupold other?

I have a Leupold. I had to use my buddies sig to get a range on the bull I shot this year because mine couldn't get it done. I also missed out on a Muley buck because I couldn't get a range. I'll be looking at a sig as soon as I can manage.

How do you like the Thunderbeast? I've been eyeballing that for my .300. Beautiful gun, BTW.

    Annual elk rifle thread

Proof Research Elevation FDE in .300 win mag, Nightforce nx8 2.5-20 for the optic. 200 grain Hornady Eldx hand load. First year with it, dropped a bull and my wife used it to take her first mule deer buck. The brake I have on it makes it a real dandy shooter but I'm hoping to afford a can in the...

    Northwest Montanan

I finally created an account after realizing I was missing out. Lifelong hunter with an appreciation for the quiet places. I've got a couple bull elk under my belt, an archery bear, some deer and plenty of birds of all sorts. My goal is to hunt every non special-draw unit in Montana for various...
