Heading out to the Hells Canyon Wilderness in Oregon on an archery Elk hunt early September.
I’ve never been to the unit, I live 12 hours away and due to work was unable to get up there and scout.
Can anyone who has ever hunted that area give me some pointers on where I could possible find...
1. Calling won’t hurt you that time of year, but don’t be surprised if you don’t hear any talking then.
2. Kill it. Hang it. Make trips. I would bone it out after it hangs
Call if they aren’t talking. Shut up when they are. That is my rule of thumb. However this is depending on the area as well. If a bull is alone and calling, then we bugle back to get him fired up and looking for a fight
We have used a kayak before. Just cover it with burlap or spray paint it camo. You don’t need an expensive one if you are just using it to retrieve. Sometimes we get in our kayaks and sit in the reeds with makeshifts blinds. You’ll be able to access parts of the lake/pond you couldn’t otherwise
Move through the thick forests slowly and methodically once you get into an area off the trail a ways. Walk 20 yards, stop and listen for 30 seconds - rinse and repeat. You will see more animals if you move slowly and attentively. I grew up hunting west of the cascades and this is all about you...
