Better late than never they say. Unit 76 did not disappoint although my son and I worked long and hard, before during and after the hunt. All was worth the effort. Elk of a lifetime for me.

I really appreciate the help from everyone, at least those that are really trying to help lol! Got it narrowed down to a couple of basins after scouting last week and looking forward to posting my bull pic! Good luck to all.

    Another CO unit 76 question

Thanks for the info and I'm aware of the need for conditioning and working on it. I live in the Denver area and get out hiking regularly. I'll be there scouting late next week too. Let me know where they are haha! Good luck on your hunt.

    Another CO unit 76 question

Great advice. Several years ago I realized the same thing, that showing up and scouting a couple of days early makes a huge difference and fortunatley I can do that, and will for this hunt. With only 5 hunting days it's even more important.

    Another CO unit 76 question

Not wanting to sound dumb but how would I find out the areas with established outfitters? I will absolutely enjoy the scouting trip, backpacking around for a week or so should be great.

Thanks and good luck to you too. Wish I could help you but I've never hunted that far to the north. Our hunts are all in and around the flat tops wilderness.

    Another CO unit 76 question

I'm nervous to post this but I'm going for it anyway. I'm 63 yrs old and burned 8 pts to draw 1st rifle bull in unit 76 this year. I'm in good shape for my age but this could be my lifetime hunt for a nice bull on public lands with the point creep. I've never been in the unit but plan at least...

Hey JosGlo141. For some reason I don't have the option to PM you, although I have the option for everyone else. Can you PM with the info? Thanks

Thanks to everyone else for the welcome comments. It's nice to find a forum of hunters that aren't trying to knock everyone else down!

Necessary gear for first western hunt.

Both are fine guns. The 30-06 is the Rodney Dangerfield of guns, it doesn't get any respect! Although it's probably killed more North American big game, proficiently, than any other caliber. I grew up on that gun and now my son shoots it, I still like 180 gr partitions for it but not trying...

Well I'll be darned! I didn't know there were state specific forums here...duh! Thanks and I'll get in there. I did post a pic of my son and his bull last year in the Lets see your elk thread that I'm proud of!

Necessary gear for first western hunt.

One more thing I didn't see mentioned is to have a windbreaker/water proof or repellant jacket. Very important to stay warm when sitting or when it's snowing. Gore tex is great but for your 1st hunt in the mountains anything windproof and water repellant will work. Find something w/o insulation...

Necessary gear for first western hunt.

I have the same binos and been using them for about 35 years hunting CO forests. You'll be fine with them. Get good base layers of clothing, not expensive, just good non-cotton stuff. If you can, carry tire chains, shovel, tow chain/strap and hilift jack to get out or unstuck if it snows. Or you...

    Mule Deer Books?

Good question, I don't know about books but the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website actually has some pretty good info available for hunting each species. Other states may have the same.

    Mule deer question

I believe there are no over the counter buck tags in CO, although I could be wrong. Doe maybe. 2nd draw is your best option like others already said. Good luck.

    You got that right!

    Elk .... Let's see them!!!

My son's bull last year. White River Forest OTC. He and I packed it out and almost killed me but I'd do it again in a hearbeat. 😂

Just joined the group but this is my 41st year hunting in CO. My son and I have gotten public land elk 3 of the last 4 years, and a couple of trophy class bucks in the off year so I think we have things pretty well dialed in. I drew a unit 76 bull tag this year and at 63 years old, it might be...
