Our group drew 5) 2nd season Rifle Elk. We have a couple Resident Bull tags as well. Half the group are first time Elk Hunters, this will be fun, if nothing else!
We turned up a sow and cub at 400 yds around 3,000 ft first day out (4/13) mid morning. We met two hunters that evening they harvested a boar about 3-4 miles down the same canyon we were hunting. Expecting to see more activity next trip out. 🤞Great start to the season!
Well said. I love the Roosevelt quote BTW. I've spent some time in the sawtooths and pioneers chasing mule deer and elk, and have seen bear. I would likely go west- towards the Snake River, my two cents.
Take the 375 H&H! Break the curse! I say this as I inherited a beautiful walnut/stainless Safari Express 375 H&H and drew a late season Bull elk tag (with ZERO pts) in Hell's Canyon - Snake River OR. I took the 375 for the first 3 days, saw plenty of bulls, none within a range I'd shoot. After...
Having not had a spring bear tag for 2 years I'm calling '24 the Redemption hunt, having seen 3 and taking no shots on my previous hunt. More so I'm guiding/mentoring a 48yr old friend who is a newborn hunter. This part I'm most excited about as I can pass my skills and knowledge along but also...
We drew 2 tags in Oregon with 1pt. Same unit, 41-42. Having never stepped foot in the unit, I hope the Dalles biologist has some Intel to share. Let the ticks crawl!!
Jeff, how'd you fare this year? I took a couple limits early season, and I tried a few spots I thought would produce, but didn't.. seasons not over and I'm not giving up. Any interest in getting together in the next couple weeks?
I stayed in the virtual que for 7hrs. Although it wasn't a surprise the general Elk tags we were after sold out before we got in, 4 of us non-res did get general deer tags in our desired unit. I'd call it success all considering the wait.
Great to hear it! Did you go south of Central OR?
We cut a 3 man limit of ducks today, and bagged a few bonus geese.
1st day out of the season total success!
Have you been out yet? I just returned from a Elk and Deer hunt in Idaho, success with both!!
I'm headed out tomorrow for day #1 waterfowl in OR. Zone 2
The mallards weren't necessarily fishy, we just didn't see a abundance of them. I'd definitely say the majority of the other ducks we took off the salt were quite fishy. I started smoking them into duck jerky.
Wikiup and Crane may hold some birds. Learning curve this year.
I did hunt sea ducks, but only a few times in 6yrs. Mostly hunted straights of Juan De Fuca, the mouth of the Dungeness and surrounding areas. Teal, widgeon, gad, and mallards. If I ever had a choice I'd take the teal every time! Being so close to Canada when it rained ducks it poured! I'm not...
Greetings Jeff! I too am into hunting fowl, now located in Central OR, previously Olympic Peninsula, WA. I've got the boat and plenty of gear, this will be the first year hunting Oregon. I'm looking forward to meeting folks and exploring some waters as well.
Salmonchaser, how'd you fare in the draw this year?
I drew another awesome OR Archery Buck Tag, otherwise I'm OTC Rifle Idaho Muley Buck come Oct.
Last year's late season elk hunt in the canyon kicked my ass.
