    How cold is too cold?

I’ve lived in tents for months on end in very cold temps. I’ve seen some very bad advice on this thread. First, a good 4 season tent will keep you much warmer than a 3 season tent. Ventilation is one of the ways good 4 season tents protect you. It will literally rain in many 3 season tents...

If I only knew this when I first started backpacking....

Trail runners are fine if you have an easy bailout if things go wrong. I can blow out a pair of trail runners in a day. My weight is a factor plus I am hard on shoes. I have worn the tread off of overmolded trail runner soles in less than two weeks before. Hiking shoes typically last for 4...

    Boots for Elk Hunting?

Boots are a funny thing. I pretty much need to wear uninsulated boots unless the temps get below 0. My feet just sweat too much. This year I am trying something new and wearing uninsulated boots while walking and changing into 40 Below Booties once I get to glassing locations. If it is really...

    Stabbed my shin on deadfall

All of my serious injuries happen when I am just walking around. I can see myself getting seriously injured playing disc golf.

    Bear Spray- Accidental Discharge

My wife sprayed herself once. Water didn't help much. The oil in the spray doesn't wash off easy. She had to use soap and water and used some milk to neutralize it. I always have some soap. Spraying myself would be about as good of an excuse to use it as I can think of.

    Darn knees

I always knew I would pay the price for all of the fun I had in my twenties. It turns out big jumps and drops to flat landings aren't great for your body. I can relate to the pain.

    Canadian Black Bear Kills Woman

I lived in prime Grizz country for a while. Be careful with cooking and cleanup your camp and you won't have problems. Also, a desperate black bear is probably more dangerous than the typical grizzly. I still carry bear spray and a big gun when appropriate and recommend others do the same.

    Inreach

I am carrying a mini and my phone with OnX for now. I tried the earthmate app. It was ok, but not great. The OnX app is far superior. I am excited to see what goHUNT comes up with for their offline app. The mini and a paper map is a solid backup, but I typically keep track of what drainage I am...
