    Backcountry hunting and extra ammo?

3 in my Remington and 3 in the pack. Last six year I've come back with 5. Pray and Spray doesn't respect the animal or the game!

    Sticky situations

2 years ago, slow still hunting into the wind toward the top of a ridge in fairly thick timber. Had to piss, so turned downwind, as I was finishing business, hear a branch break. Turn around and see the rear patch and nad's of a nice bull running away at 15-20yds. Guess my dad was wrong when...

First Time Elk Hunting, DIY Idaho

DAV here also. Spent last 3 years in unit 67. Steep, country but have managed a close bow encounter each year but unfortunately the shot never presented itself. Beautiful and majestic animals! Two 5 night solo hunts each Sep with a day back at the campground in between. Be prepared for...

    Game attraction to camera

Little kitty just before it knocked the camera over. No trees in the high desert so I put em on rocks, off trails.

    Powder for 7mm mag

I finally found my hunting load for non-lead in California. 150gn Barnes Copper TTSX bullet with IMR 4831, 0.010 off the Lands. 2" 4 shot group at 300yds with the fifth being a flier (my fault) 4" left. Remington Model 700CDL with Nikon 3x9 scope. Pretty tame load giving me 2990fps. Took 4...

    Hunting Alone

Over a month a year solo backpack deer/elk hunts every year. Wife thinks I'm crazy. It's Nirvana & Regenerative, with an occasional nerve-wracking minute or two. I always come back more relaxed, focused and 10-15lbs lighter. Have had my daughter and her husband hike up and meet me one. That...

    Boot Waterproof Products

Sno-Seal hit with a blow dryer to get the leather to absorb it. Works great and good for several weeks of hard constant use.

How much water do you carry in early season?

2 Nalgene bottles filled, a purifier and 3 collapsible liter bags. Camp near a seeps I find up high. Some are pretty nasty but beats carrying it up there!

    Routine

Power-bar or cliff bar for b-fast pre-sunrise. Couple of handfuls of trail mix during the day. 1 Mt House for dinner, after dark. Shot of Scotch and in the bag. Repeat for 7 days, then back to trailer and wife for a good meal, shower and good nights sleep. Then back out for 7 days.

What is in your First Aid kit?

Duct tape, two band-aids, pressure dressing square, quick clot, aspirin, moleskin, superglue. Have only used the moleskin (hot spot) and duct-tape/dressing square (closed a decent gash on leg)...both times, was able to stay (solo) on the mountain and continue hunting.

    Tent input

Bought the summer moon 2 person this year to replace my 5 year old tent that was well used. Very happy, although I haven't taken it up to the mountains yet. We'll see after a 14 day solo Idaho hunt how it does!

    Calif Draw results are posted.

Like usual, more points for Elk, Sheep, Antelope. Got my A22 tag, so will have a chance to put some meat in the freezer, then it's up to Idaho for OTC archery Elk.

My thoughts on the Yellowstone Attacks

Can't fix stupid. Wish I had a camera when I watched a lady feed a carrot to a deer (not from her hand, instead, she stuck it in her mouth)!! I was all ready to run fetch a first aid kit. After, I told her that was dangerous and she scoffed at me, saying they were tame. 5 minutes later I...

    Calling cow elk

In Idaho around 8K ft, I've had good luck still hunting the thick timber all day. Through a bugle or cow call once every hour or two. Very rarely do I get any answers (once every few days...other hunters?). Most elk I've encountered come in silent (but you can certainly hear them coming if...

Books on the Battle of the Little Bighorn/Custer/Pictures of the Battlefield?

Great place to spend a full day. We used to take out leadership courses there for a battlefield tour. Even though it was another era, lots of tactical and leadership lessons still apply today! Man were those men tough...another age!

    Solar panels for camper

We put one 240 watt on our trailer. If sunny, it will recharge by mid afternoon. We're stingy with lights, may watch an hour of TVv. I've got another 240 watt panel in the garage and will probably put it on this summer....depending in how my wife does with one, for two weeks while I elk hunt...

    Broadhead Accuracy Issues

My broadheads really respond to my form/technique. If I torque the bow, way off. If I don't break the shot correctly, way off. Neither happens to my field point. First few broadheads are usually spot on and then I get cocky and they start loosening up a lot. Some of it could be tuning but...

Do I really need a Spotting Scope?

Exactly this: "the way I like to, which is hiking from drainage to drainage looking for sign and indications that elk have been in the drainage recently. There is a lot that occurs below the canopy that you can't see when you're glassing from a peak." I carried one in on a solo 1-week trip...
