Kenetrek boots so heavy vs hiking boots

I've been there in my lightweight boots and had no regret. To each his own. Bottom line is each person has their individual preference. There is no "right" answer here.

    First Bivy Hunt

Unless I missed it, I would definitely bring rain gear. I personally would take a spare water filter because I've been on trips when the primary failed and drinking straight from a delicious mountain stream can ruin your hunt. I use the Sawyer mini water filter that can attach to a collapsible...

    Colorado Waterfowl

Just wanted to say thanks for the information in this thread...I'm new to the Denver area and have been looking at getting into duck hunting. I'm finding out that anything "convenient" to Denver is far too overcrowded to even enjoy myself so it makes sense that I'll have to drive a ways. I'm...

    Hide usage

I had a deer hide tanned hair-on last year at a local taxidermist. He charged something like $100, but talking to him most taxidermists just flesh out the hides and send it to a major commercial tannery. Looking at different company websites (just google "commercial tannery"), they accept...

Who caries binos while rifle hunting

Agree with all the responses about not using scopes for anything but aiming where you're going to fire. The pack I bought (cheapo brand), came with a built in bino harness on the shoulder straps. It works ok, but doesn't hold it tight to the body like my normal bino harnesses do. I haven't...

    Cecil the lion part two...

If you search for it there's several sites that still have the video up. The internet is forever. Glad the main link is down though.

    Cecil the lion part two...

I completely agree with MTGomer. This video absolutely hurt the image of hunters in the eyes of the non-hunters...the people who decide our fate on the political front. As with everything in life, people need to think before posting stupid things on the internet. Edit: Obviously hunting with...

    Hammock Camping

Glad I saw this. I bought a hammock and am in the process of making a sweet lightweight tarp for it. I already replaced the line with lightweight stuff and am bringing some thicker ribbon so it doesn't damage the trees I hang from. We chose the location of our camp based on a small flat spot...

    1st time for everything

One thing I'll mention is "acclimating" is different than being at 100% performance. When you're acclimated you won't feel sick, but your performance level will drop proportionally to the lack of oxygen. This is normal and it takes months (in my case) before you're back at your previous level...

Best hunting strategy in a unit with lots of roads?

Some really good info here...I was going to ask the same question myself. I ended up getting a deer tag in a unit close to Denver with roads crossing everywhere (leftover tag and my wife is expecting our first so I wanted to be able to respond in a reasonable amount of time if something were to...

Info for OTC elk colorado or montana

Something else to consider is the leftover tags in Colorado. They'll be published on 27 July and go on sale 2 Aug (confirm dates though). If nothing on there looks good to you, you can always fall back on OTC tags. Website info: http://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/BigGameLicenseOptions.aspx

    Hello! Hunter in Colorado

Hi everyone, new to the forum here. I've been in Colorado for three years and have tried my hand at elk hunting each season. First season OTC rife, next archery and rifle, and last year just archery. I really enjoy backpacking in a few miles on foot and going about it that way. No animals as...
