Hunting With My Brother, Thanks to Hank

Thanks to this forum, I've gotten to know Hank (Hank4Elk) both online and in real life, which is quite the treat. We've shared our appreciation for Catron county, hunting, and the stories that make up our lives. One of those stories is that I'm pretty much an adult onset hunter and have been...

A Ram vs a Buck - Funny Video

I just saw this and had to share after I got a good chuckle. Their sparring tactics mean the ram has no chance and he quickly figures it out. https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/am3diy/ram_ends_up_with_more_than_he_planned_for/

May We All Still Be Hunting at 100+ Like This Guy

This guy has figured things out... At 104 years old, Virginia man completes another successful deer season as oldest known active hunter in America

A recent Backpacking Trip Into the Gila Wilderness

I grew up in southern NM (Cruces) and as a boy scout we'd do 50 mile hikes each summer. We may have gone in and come out in different spots, but we always went to the same place: The Potholes. That's our name for a part that is a natural canyon where the water flows through and forms pools big...

    2017 Eclipse (August 21)

Is anyone else making plans to go check out the eclipse in August as it swoops down from Idaho to Tennessee? I'm planning on grabbing the family and putting on a thousand miles or so and driving up from New Mexico to see it. My initial route is to pass through Fort Collins / Cheyenne and then...

    Colorado Applications Due

Well, I finally remembered that CPW deadline is tomorrow so I better put my application in. FYI!!! This marks the first time I've ever put in outside of NM, but it is just preference points since I have no idea which unit to target in southern Colorado for elk and/or deer. Maybe I'll actually...

What goofy things have you seen animals do?

After seeing this picture on Reddit of a deer slipping on ice (I couldn't figure out how to link directly to this photo taken by a redditer's mom), it made me wonder what funny animal actions Hunt Talkers have seen. It also reminds me of a Far Side cartoon of the graceful jumping buck about to...

Elk at the VLA in NM

While I was hunting the unit south of where I work (the Very Large Array), a coworker shot this photo. That size of a herd would have made my cow hunt much easier!

    Please Publish to Google Play

Hi Randy, Stitcher is absolutely giving me fits between a crappy search capability and really poor downloads of podcasts (it just took 20 minutes for yours to begin). I'm ready to dump it for Google Play but you're not on that service! If you ever publish there I'd be a happy camper.

Hillmap - Neat tool to compare topo and satellite imagery at same time

I just came across this online tool at rokslide. Hillmap.com It is a configurable split screen for topos and satellite imagery. I can see it as a quick way to gauge what trail or route you're thinking of doing, and is a little faster than using Google Earth to switch between topos and satellite.

NM Monsoons Kicking In (Photos by VLA)

The VLA area (Intersection of units 13, 15, 16E, and 17) is greening up as the monsoons have finally gotten going with consistency in NM. It's a nice place to working at during the summer and fall. The first shot is looking towards Hank's neck of the woods. The second is from highway 52.

    Ketchikan Recommendations?

My family, brother, and I are here for the next week and are visiting cousins who run a marina. We have a salmon trip chartered and a few other plans made but I'm curious if HTers familiar with Ketchikan have recommendations for guys or for family stuff. Either way I can't wait to fish and hang...

    Stupid cleaning question

Ok HTers, what's your post-range day cleaning procedure? I feel like something is off in the number of patches I run through the barrel while still staying dirty. After 25 (used both ways) they are still a bit grungy. I even scrubbed early on so I would have thought I hit a lot of crud off...

Cabelas XL Outfitters Cot w/ Pivot Arm - in New Mexico

After moving to 4 Cam-o-Cots I don't need a fifth cot even if it is huge and super comfy. Pickup in the Socorro or ABQ area, maybe Cruces. This is the one with the pivot arm for easy set up and it is in really good shape. I spent $120 on it 2 hunting seasons ago. $75

Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65mm Angled Scope

I'm at work and unable to put up photos at the moment but I have a Viper HD 15-45x65mm angled spotting scope for sale that I've used for 3 years. The objective is clear and the eyepiece is brand new (I sold a WA eyepiece and had to get a new regular one). The neoprene case was trimmed to...

Shot Placement for Monolithic/Copper Bullets - Shoulder or Double Lung?

I have a question for all you GMX, ETip, or TSX/TTSX users out there. Using these bullets, do you prefer to shoot a deer or elk right behind the crease, and through the lungs, or go for a front shoulder, anchoring shot? I’m looking into taking mule deer with one (120g TTSX 7mm08) this year but I...

    CDS on Muzzleloader?

Are any of you all using the CDS scopes on your muzzleloader? If so, is it because you want to be spot on at muzzleloading distances or are you finding that you have the accuracy in your rifle to dial up even longer shots with the scope (long being above 200 yards)? I just picked up a ML for...

Help me pick out a turkey gun

I've decided picking up turkey hunting would be fun despite central NM not being a turkey hotspot (that I know of). I had hoped to use my old Stevens 77C (hand me down) 12G but after parterning it with a few different loads with its "superchoke" fully choked down I am not too confident in...

CMP allowed to sell surplus 1911s

This is interesting... I'm certainly more into this than an M1 through CMP. Might be time for a 45 in the house! http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/11/foghorn/breaking-obamau-s-army-1911s/
