    WY Results are out!

I finally drew my first WY tag after about a dozen years of applying!! Drew unit 54-1 with max points. Hope to get out there early and hunt the last week of archery & first week of rifle, and then go back during the late season if necessary. I'm really looking forward to this hunt.

    NM Elk Draw Confusion...

HF qualifies thier stats by stating that they are based on first choice applicants and that it is intended simply to show the demand for one unit over another. I always use both the first choice demand and the total of all three demand when decinding my three unit choices.

    2 points in Colorado....

Don't just look at the previous years points. I would recommend that you look at the demand over the previous few years. Sometimes demaind will go up/down everyother year. One year the demand is low and people will jump in the following year because of the better odds. Then the next year...

    Need your opinions!!

Oak - nice looking mount and a great billy. The rock/vegitation make him look like he is still on the mountain!! I forgot to mention. We ordered the largest form that was avialble and the taxi said he would still have to cut it up and enlarge the length by 3" - 4" to make my cape fit.

    Need your opinions!!

Thanks for all the honest opinions. I decided to keep the horse face and roman nose. mtmiller - your second goat is exactly what I am looking for. I also decided to repair the broken horn. I have several deer and elk mounted with broken tines. On those animals it isn't so apparent because...

    Need your opinions!!

My taxi is ready to start working on my full body pedestal mount for my 2011 mountain goat. I know what pose I want and we are going to get a form picked out in the next couple days. Since this may be the only goat I ever harvest, let alone get mounted, I want to make sure I do it right. My...

S.D. mule deer vs. white tail

JS - where is your buddy's place at? I assume it is west river since as a NR you are only allowed to apply and hunt west river for bucks. What unit is his ranch in? I live and hunt here in SD and could help you out a little but need more info.

    My Colorado Goat Hunt

dunc I just read your post. If you still have time you owe it to yourself to keep after them. You will regret it years later. These opportunities are too rare and deserve giving it everything you have. Trust me, I love hunting elk and deer, but the satisfaction and memories from this goat...

    My Colorado Goat Hunt

Draftstud I am no expert on mountain goats and I was also curious about the glands, so I did a little research. What I found out on-line is that they are a scent gland and that the billys will rub up against the nannys during the rut to leave their scent. The glands on my goat did not really...

    My Colorado Goat Hunt

Baerman The elk hunt was disappointing. I have applied for the 16D archery elk tag as my first choice for many many years with no luck. This year we new we had about a 40% - 50% chance to draw the unit 76 archery tags in CO so I changed my NM application to the first rifle hunt due to a...

    My Colorado Goat Hunt

Outdooraddict - I have been maxed out at 6 weeks of vacation time at work for a few years. I kept telling my boss that some year I was going to use up a buch whenever I drew a premium tag - I just never expected to draw three of them in the same year!! As for taking that much time from home -...

    My Colorado Goat Hunt

I got very lucky this year and drew the only NR tag for the second season G17 mountain goat hunt. Many of you will hate me, but I drew this tag on only my 3rd year of applying with only 2 points!! I had been watching this unit with its success rates going down every year and the quality of...

    NM Muzzy Antelope

Thanks for the comments everyone. To answer a couple questions - my goat was just over 16". We saw at least 4 B&C bucks on this hunt of which I watched two of them get harvested by other hunters. I was hoping to harvest the buck in the third picture. He was at least 16" and had much better...

    NM Muzzy Antelope

We had a great time on this hunt. My 15 year old son Spencer and I both had tags, and my 17 year old son Braden came along to help with spotting and dragging. Saturday morning we set on a fence crossing well before shooting time. We were sitting near a couple small bushes about 180 yards off...

New Mexio Ek in 16A, 16B/22, and 36

I hunted 16B in 2003 during the first rifle season. What season/weapon do you have?

    New mexico unit 34

Godspeed - This was a DIY hunt. you shouldn't have any problem finding elk in 34. Finding a big bull might be more difficult though on that later hunt. I didn't apply either of my sons for the youth hunt in 34 this year due to the reports of the quality going down over the past few years and...

    removable horn mounts

Nice bull I have a couple of elk mounts done with one antler removable. My taxi uses a rectangular rod aobout 4" long glued into the antler that then slides into a square tube imbedded into the top of the mount. It sure makes it easy to get through narrow doors and hallways. you can't tell...

Hold him off for a big one?

Discuss this with your son ahead of time. Make sure he understands the potential of the unit and the potential outcomes. This is his hunt, so help him make an educated decision. Does he want a trophy and is he willing to eat his tag by holding out? Or is he happy with a 280 class bull. Make...

    New mexico unit 34

Which rifle season did you draw? My son drew the youth hunt 3 years ago. Tons of elk and lots of bugling all day long on his hunt which was the first week of October. He passed up 12 different bulls before shooting this one mid morning on the second day. I scouted the week prior to his hunt...
