If I plan to keep shots 70 yards and in with a .490 round ball going 1650 at the muzzle, am I crazy for chasing cow elk? I can use conicals, but I just have an itch to shoot roundballs.

Looks like Gierach died of a reported heart attack yesterday. Ive enjoyed a bunch of his books. I know some felt they were all the same or similar, but to me that was kind of the point.
I was given some 118 gr cast bullets with gas checks and I’m looking to load some for my .30-30. My loads I’ve put together are probably going to push them somewhere around 2200-2450 fps. Is that too fast even with gas checks? In terms of leading the barrel?
Do any reloaders seal their primers and/or case mouths? It seems like overkill for my personal needs, but with an eye toward longer term storage of bulk loads, and potential to hunt in wetter environments, it got me wondering if anyone does this at home.
Shot in the dark, but does anyone know of any NAVDHA NA tests with openings in the intermountain west or even beyond? Several of the closest ones available are totally booked with wait lists.
