I have this same fear of her casually telling acquaintances/ my friends “oh he’s off XX Hwy near XX mountain”
I use InReach and have tracking on my iPhone; keeps her anxiety in-check
I know a few Outfitters here in the community; hauling animals, vet bills, insurance, gear, grazing leases, feed, clearing trails, working 14hr days for months on end, dealing with USFS (permits), hiring seasonal labor - it is hardly profitable or “easy money”.
They ride rough - but look cool; limited dealership network.
Pretty niche if that’s what you’re going for. Similar to G Wagons, Range / Land Rovers, etc - it’s for metropolitans to look outdoorsy.
Moose no draw/point, Bear point, deer no draw/point
Stupid as a resident that I can’t hunt deer in my own county, and my buddy from TX got the same tag I put in for with 0pts
My buddy sold his inReach on FB right before the season last year thinking that he’d cash out on the device/subscription and rely on iPhone sat msg
He has since regretted that decision. Here’s the major drawbacks:
- No group messaging
- Waiting on satellites constantly to send / receive. Lots...
Turkey hunting in the afternoon and leaving your phone in the vehicle seem odd. That TH is like 45min outside of town, so he couldn’t be going in more than a mile if he had that appt at 3:45
I’d assume he’d want a phone to take pics or use OnX/maps
Are they local? If so - just be there; she’s going to be too overwhelmed to take calls. Don’t ask “what can I do to help” - just be there.
As I’ve been through this in various capacities it’s best to make sure this person isn’t alone
+1 For sun shirts (w/hood), saltwater brands (PFG) are great
I also refuse to own polo shirts - solely on the basis of avoiding being asked “Do you play golf?” ⛳️
I feel like 80% of the coverage Peacock serves me is Curling & Ice Dancing; I have to dig for the actual cool sports replays (biathlon, Nordic, moguls, etc).
Also, really annoying the amount of commercials for a PAID subscription 😑
Winter recreation (skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing) have been non-existent. Now my next concern is our reservoirs and lake-based recreation this summer with minimal runoff and higher needs on the front range
I can see how someone might move on ….but for me it’s too intermingled with my personality, traditions, friendships, life goals/motivations to ever “stop”.
If I ever lose that drive - I’ll just make the challenge harder (species, destinations, weapon choice).
