Coastal Black Bears- Why do you go? Why Don't you go?

It’s honestly too easy. Not much of a true hunt involved. If you’re fat, okay it might be a hunt for you but it’s really like catching fish in a barrel. Oh, and they also don’t taste very good. Not as bad as a coastal Fall bear, but they still have residual salmon taste.

    Sheep book

I don’t think you’ll find more published information on sheep hunting anywhere. Great books to read, and written by a great guy.

    New State Guide Concession Areas

With the new passage of Senate Bill 97 here in Alaska state lands will be moving to a guide concession program much like on Federal lands. Hopefully this will reduce crowding in areas of the state with no limit on the number of guides that can operate in them. Additionally, it will incentivize...

I was there in 2023, and no one inquired if I had the vaccine.

Reliable air transportation services in Alaska

It wouldn’t surprise me if many transporters adopt a 40 Mile Air business model of repeat clients only in the future.

Reliable air transportation services in Alaska

Agreed. Way to shoot yourself in the foot. Expect to see increased prices in the future….

    The Rinella Effect

Have any of you guys noticed what happened to opportunities in Alaska as a result of the big names influencers especially……GoHunt: Well, if you ever wanted to go to Kodiak to hunt for more than one deer, that’s gone if you’re not a resident. More than likely your opportunity to go hunt Caribou...

    Anyone Draw?

Just landed in Kodiak for a goat hunt. Maybe I can pick your brains when I get back from the field?

    Glacier Bears - Unit 1C South (DL018)

Hey Buzzy, you should reach out to the ADF&G in Juneau for this kind of information. Whatever you learn, please don't post it on the internet. Those bears are incredibly unique, and whenever people start posting unique and hard to do hunts on forums they take off like wildfire.

    Anyone looking for a pilot?

If you're looking for jobs in AK, you're most likely going to need quite a few more hours especially if you want to fly floats or tailwheel. However, given the state of the industry that may or may not hold true currently for 135 operators up here. My recommendation is to learn what the air...

Kodiak deer limit reduced for nonresidents

Would you be interested in hearing where the next restriction will be? (My opinion anyway) Just do a quick Youtube search on Dalton Highway Caribou and you'll see. It's pretty spectacular how many people feel the need to showcase where they hunt. After the shutdown of caribou on much of the...

    March Muskox

@BradA, are you referring to Greenland for your trip? I think it would certainly be a very exciting adventure just getting there.

    March Muskox

Thanks guys. Buzzy congrats on the draw. The logistics are definitely not something to do last minute so I'm glad you have everything you can take are of done. Now it's just a waiting game...I'm going with Ishmael.

    Best and worst hunting/outdoor writers

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the late Canadian author of so many inspiring outdoor adventures stories for young people, Farley Mowat. Another favorite, is John Haines, an Alaskan poet and writer who homesteaded after WWII. If you really want to be inspired by the North country, pick up...

    March Muskox

That's a great question, and probably one I'm grappling with the most. I would anticipate keeping the rifle outside the house in a soft case as soon as I get to Mekoryuk. Whatever I bring will stay outside or in some sort of cold shed to prevent any warm/freeze condensation issues. I'm also...

    March Muskox

Thank you for the feedback. That is exactly the kind of information that I would like to hear about. My 338 Win Mag bolt action is a safer bet, but it doesn't shoot as accurately. Although at 100 yards or less, that's pretty nonsensical. I go back and forth, but if I hear enough from folks...

    March Muskox

Well folks, I'm starting to prepare for my upcoming March Muskox hunt on Nunivak. I've done about as much research as I can at this point, but keep coming back to which rifle to choose. I see a lot of YouTube videos of guys hunting with bows so I'm pretty sure any high powered rifle will work...

Feathered Friends Volant Puffy Pants and Jacket

I have been wearing one of their puffy coats for 20 years and it still is keeping me warm in subzero weather here in Alaska. I just convinced the wife to buy one with the idea that it should last her at least 20 years as well. There aren't many other down coats out there that can match their...
