Need genius advice from an Archery Physics Geek

I believe in my state the minimum draw weight is 40lbs., definitely check your state game laws, unfortunately i think your son is gonna have to wait a bit longer before being able to use his bow in a hunting situation. Good luck to him!

Elk load for X-Bolt .300 WM

I shoot the Barnes TTSX 180gr. out of my 300wm, getting just a tad bit over 2950fps, but any 180-200gr bullet should do well in that rifle of yours. The neat thing is that you can drop down in weight when using a monolithic bullet. According to Barnes their .308/168gr. bullet would react the...

    New WBY Caliber

It is interesting to say the least. But honestly, I can't see myself getting one, the price alone is a bit much. Don't get me wrong, any Weatherby is an heirloom, however I already have enough tack drivers in my stable. I hope it succeeds for Weatherby.

    My Two-year HOWA Experiment

I noticed some aren't happy with the "short" barrels offered for these prototype rifles. Short barrels tend to be more accurate because there's less barrel harmonics coming into play and short barrels are stiffer. Most rifles today have standard 22" barrels, and because of new technology in...

    30-06 hand loads

I have an X-Bolt in 30-06, and the most accurate load I use is a 168gr Barnes TTSX with 55grs of H4350. Get 1/2" groups at a 100yds, and chrono'd average velocity is 2968fps. for a 5 shot group.

    Weather Radios?

Really good question. Actually never thought about it. For me, I have the Garmin In-Reach Mini and get the weather updates on it, but it's definitely worth trying. Good luck

Mechanical Broadhead Recommendations (Sevr, Deadmeat, etc.)

I am trying mechanicals for the first time this year, that said, I was loaned by a friend the new Rage X-treme 4-blade. They are sold for @ $30 for a 2 pack. they have a 7/8" wide 2-blade style head at the top. and then 90 degrees from that are the 2 "mechanical" blades that open up to a 2.3"...

    168 gr Nosler E-Tip and the 30-06

I have experience with this exact load, unfortunately for me, my x-Bolt didn't like them very much, I played with different powders, but just couldn't get them to shoot well, I tried the same load in a friends rifle and they shot great, he even used them on a couple of hunts, it was a complete...

    Meal replacement bar?

I usually rely on ProBars for meal replacement, but also use Larabar and Clifbars.

    Killer instinct 415 crossbow

I personally never had any experience with one, however I have a few friends that purchased those exact crossbows. As I understand it, they come with a lifetime guarantee, and they are decent crossbows from what I hear from my friends, they kill deer and are accurate. Good luck.

    Erratic shooting at short distance

Sounds like your arrow is flexing too much and settles out as the yardage goes up. I agree with some of the other comments, paper tune your bow, and check to make sure you are using the correct spine arrow for the poundage and draw length. I went to a stiffer spited arrow, because the bow I...

    One gun hunter

I have 2 rifles I reach for, usually my Savage in 270Win is the one I reach for the most, second is my X-bolt in 30-06. As for shotguns, it's my 870 that's my go to.

    Sidearm choice

I have carried either my G20 in 10mm or G22 in .40S&W. I have also carried my GP-100 in 357, but I am more proficient with my semi-auto pistols. Yes, the 40S&W is kind of on the lite side, however it is still an effective tool and wouldn't hesitate carrying it. Sometimes circumstances can't be...

    Cheap vs expensive

I have been shooting the Beman ICS arrows for years, and yes they are less expensive than some other brands. However, I've never had an issue and get great accuracy out to 60 yards, which is the max range I'll shoot to, and never had issues with penetration either. I don't think you'll go wrong...

    Elite 35

I have a few friends that own Elite bows and have nothing but good things to say about it. From what I understand Elite bows was founded by the same individual who originally founded Bowtech. I have shot various Elite bows in the past and came close to purchasing one a few years ago, but in the...

    Non-hunting packs?

Your setup should serve you well, however, I would negate the trash bags for hauling meat, and invest in either synthetic game bags, or get a few all cotton pillow cases for transporting the meat back. Other than that, good luck!

    Two blade or three

I would go with a nice 3 or 4 blade setup. The reason being is that I've seen in the past, whether it be a mechanical 2 blade or fixed, the wound channel tends to close up and a poor blood trail is the result. Yes on an optimal shot, you'll get DRT results, and the 2 blade do work well, but I've...

    Practice Regimen

All I do, is shoot 3 arrows every other day once the nicer spring weather comes around. Then in the summer I try to shoot at least once a week at a 3D shoot at the local archery club. I figure in real life, most times you're only going to get 1 shot, on a rare occasion you might need 2. I feel...

Good youth rifles. What do y'all recommend?

I have heard many great things about the Ruger American rifles, however I don't own one. I do own a nice Savage 110 youth model in 243 and for deer and a few hogs that I bought for my wife, and it is a dream to shoot. With the synthetic stock and a VX-1 scope mounted, it's lightweight and the...
