I was drawn for First Rifle in '21 and just got drawn for the same hunt this year. I started last year on the North side of GMU 73, due to some intel on a herd spotted, but it was a bust, then concentrated in 71 the next morrning and got in on some elk right near the unit boundary and stayed with 71 the rest of the time.

Came close to a good bull, but he only gave us a 5 second show and I needed at least 10 to get the sights on him. I heard a lot of guys state that during hunting season the elk go to private land, so my strategy this year is to skirt the private hard and catch them crossing the lines. You've got to get away from the roads and high traffic areas to find them.

They don't come out in the open, to feed, as they have everything in the trees, so you have to go to them. Unfortunately this is CO and its a hike and almost always UPHILL. Also get there at least 3 days in advance to acclimate to altitude...My base camp was about 9500, but was quickly plus 10K and it could cause a bad few days if you don't adjust.
