    Elk .... Let's see them!!!

My first bull elk and first archery hunt. The wife did some great calling and pulled a herd in range, but I never had a clean shot at the herd bull. He ran off to round up his cows when this nice 5x5 satellite crept in and stopped 30yds broadside. Editing to add that it was in beautiful Northern...

Your Personal Wounding Rate- Archery Elk

I didn't fill out the survey because I think it skews the data. I had my first archery elk hunt this year and shot a nice 5x5. It was just after sunset and I didn't hear an obvious crash down the hill where he ran post-shot. I thought I had a good shot, but didn't see the impact point when it...

    NM elks...

Great recap! Very cool that they're heading home with 200 lbs of elk meat. Congrats to the hunters and thanks for sharing the details of the hunt.

    Antelope...Lets See Them!!!

Got this buck in SE NM in August 2023. His prongs weren't huge, but he had a neat spread to the horns.

    NM Elk Hunting. 16E

Bow or rifle? That's impressively close to an elk.

    NM Elk Hunting. 16E

That's good input. I'm working on loads for my 28 nosler, which will probably be the one I take out there. But the wife just won an x-bolt in 6.8 Western from an RMEF raffle and that would also be a good distance shooter.

    NM Elk Hunting. 16E

Hoping to see some good pics from the archery hunts. I have a late season cow hunt in 16E and am looking forward to seeing that part of the Gila. I've spent most of my time in the Gila in 16A, B, and C.

    As they lay

From my first muzzle loader hunt a week and a half ago. I fired the shot and because of the still air, the smoke cloud obscured my view and I wasn't sure I even hit her, despite having a steady rest on the pack and a slow squeeze of the trigger with the corsshairs right where I wanted them. The...

    Hunter in NM

I hunted unit 36 a couple years ago with 2 buddies. We focused almost entirely on Nogal Canyon and the wilderness just to the west. My buddy was able to take a nice buck and there was another with him, but we never caught up to the second one. After that, about 8 inches of snow fell and the...

Good luck on the Unit 12 hunt! I've been looking at OnX and Google maps 3D until my eyes cross. It's going to be interesting but should be fun. I'm expecting to spend a lot of time behind the binoculars. AOH is Adult Onset Hunter. I grew up fishing but never hunted until my 30s. I'm still...

How are the crowds out there in the woods?

We tried turkey hunting in the middle of the week in 2020. Wife and I took two days off work so we could beat the weekend crowd. Every dispersed campsite in the mountains had at least one group of people and some of them had two, clearly separate, groups in the same little pull off. We hadn't...

Camping on Public Land in Hunting Season

I usually take the travel trailer out wherever we're hunting and setup just off a side road. I sometimes worry about someone messing with the trailer while we're out in the woods, which isn't unheard of in NM.

Can I PM you with some questions about 12? I've read some interesting things about 12 on a few different forums and would appreciate info from someone who knows the area well.
