WY - Grizzly - solo - choices
I ended up in the Wyoming range. It was a good hunt, however despite my best efforts, no elk were harmed in the making of this adventure. Did not see any bears but saw plenty of track. All black bear. I think. :) -

I'm trying to gauge risk and pick where to I want to apply for elk this year. I'm a non-resident. No guide. I'm not trying to start a squabble. These are two legitimate questions. How risky is solo hunting (and especially game recovery) in grizzly country? I've been hunting the SW Rockies... -

Unit 51 Oct 17-21 mature bull
I read somewhere recently that they closed the campground due to it getting trashed. No worries - there are plenty of places to farther up that canyon or on the other access roads. -

Valle Vidal fall bear
I drew the Valle Vidal (NM) fall bear tag. Has anyone hunted bear there? I have lots of intel on elk and fish, and some incidental bear sightings, but have not talked to anyone who has hunted bear there. I'm not using dogs. Any insights to offer?- NM_ElkNut

New Mexico Unit 51 or 52
That might be a long hike this weekend. I suspect it is still snowed in. 3 weeks ago snow across the road got deep 1 mile past the bridge. It has snowed since then. 4 wheeler maybe. Truck iffy. Hatchback not likely. Once it thaws and dries things change. -

Ryan Fire - WY unit 81 deer
I have the 80/83 deer tag and a couple 51 pronghorn tags. Any read on the fire moving far enough north to affect deer? I was planning on driving up a few days early to scout. Probably leave Wednesday. As for pronghorn I figure if it works out while I'm on deer trip fine, if not I'll go back... -

New Mexico Elk Questions
I second the recommendation for the north end of the unit over the south, especially in October. There are some high points in the south, but PJ is hard, and grass is thin in that area. There is currently gas in Ojo Caliente, and also at the 84/285 junction. Antonito CO may or may not have gas... -

6C is fragmented. There is some right near the town of Los Alamos, but most of the unit is north of Santa Clara Indian Reservation. The best hunting is often close to a boundary - Valles Caldera, Bandelier, Los Alamos National Lab, or Santa Clara Indian Reservation. -

Elk 5 miles from truck...
I have been using the small Jet Sled for years. I have holes drilled in the rim for tying off cargo, and tow ropes with handles front and back. A lot of the places I hunt are the big burns in the Jemez, usually late season with snow. The first few years after the burn you have blown down... -

Wyoming 41 Bighorns - early or late?
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, the day after I asked the question, work blew up. I won't make it up there until probably 10/19. Are the Flitners ranch property lines are pretty well fenced, so I can figure out what is public and what is not? I have maps showing it, but never did pick up...
