    Boots for Pronghorn Hunting

An all leather boot with high quality socks should do the trick. My first pronghorn trip to Wyoming the weather was dry and in the 80's, but on my last trip it snowed nearly every night and barely got out of the 20's during the day (both were in early to mid October). The latter presented the...

    Crispi Idaho GTX size 13

Wish these were a couple sizes bigger. There's not a retailer that carries Crispi boots anywhere near me. I'd love to have a comfortable, sturdy pair of boots some day for wandering around out west.

    Fly or drive to Wyoming

I am by no means an expert, but I've driven from Northwest Arkansas to Southeast Wyoming several times. As @Rzrbck918 stated, the drive is anything but fun, but with gas prices as cheap as they are right now I'd hit the road. Drive as far as you can on the first day so your second day won't be...

    New to hunting...

@Ben_BlueOx as to your previous statement about feeling foolish for asking what you might believe are basic questions, don't. Ask away! I know that's easier said than done, but trying to gain an understanding of a new hobby doesn't have an age limit. You'll find that MOST everyone in the hunting...

    Caliber for pronghorn

I took a 243 on my first antelope hunt back in 2013, but the rifle was more of a "target" rifle. While the accuracy would have been appreciated, that 10+ pound gun became a burden as my idea of a leisurely hunt involved much more walking and glassing than I anticipated. So, that being said...

Anyone use semi-auto rifles other than AR style for hunting?

I've got a BAR Safari Grade in 300 WM that is very accurate. Never had a jamming issue, but you definitely can't chamber a round quietly (Not as much of a problem out West, but it can be when you're sitting in a blind or treestand). You don't necessarily have to let the bolt slam shut, but I...

Ranking 10 Common Bolt Action Hunting Rifles Under $750

So I'll touch on one of the rifles the OP mentioned that hasn't been brought up very much. The Marlin X7 Back in 2009, I decided to get my dad a new rifle for Father's Day so I could do what I could to get him back into hunting. I spent a lot of time browsing our local gun shops and seeing what...

Cheesehead, the University of Arkansas convinced me I needed one of their diplomas too. Just an undergrad though. I also spent a lot of time as a teenager at JBU for basketball camps. You live in Wisconsin now? Or just a Packers fan?

Thanks Pagosa. I'm pretty partial to this area. I always dream of hunting out west, but I'm also pretty lucky in the fact that I can go out and buy 6 deer tags over the counter every fall. Not to mention spending $5 trying to draw a public land elk tag. Plus fishing for trout, walleye, bass...

Pronghorn are a ton of fun to pursue. Don't have to wake up and be in the field before dawn and the weather is usually pretty mild...usually. Plus they are mighty delicious!

Best of luck dsquaredwi. I've never made it over to Norfork, but I hear the fishing is excellent. I've done some kayak fishing around Beaver Lake for trout and I really enjoyed it. I've never been much of a boat person, so a kayak was a perfect solution for getting out on the water.

    Lever Action for Pronghorn

I'm loving all the feedback. A Savage 99 and a Winchester Model 88 would definitely allow you a little more wiggle room as far as range is concerned. Excellent rifles in both form and function. Excellent point about hunting with a handgun. That's another arena I hope to dabble in sometime down...

    Lever Action for Pronghorn

You obviously have the experience, so I definitely want to hear your thoughts. That is exactly what I was looking for. Being able to head into the field and not feel like you were attempting an impossible task. I understand your logic with thinking the 308 Marlin Express should be excluded...

    Lever Action for Pronghorn

Thanks BrentD. That's another great looking rifle! Maybe one of these days I'll venture into the blackpowder world, but for now I'll have to stay in the cozy confines of smokeless powder and brass cases. I guess my millennialism is starting to show a little.....ouch. I do have an old Marlin...
