    Well, first I'd choose to stop using gift as a verb, but that's literally just me. Henry's new suppressor specials look interesting, but they're not in .308. Whatever I got would be a .308 and either Browning or Henry depending on what I could get my hands on. Availability is not great.

    You can't predict what a kid will do down the road. A rifle you both use together is most likely to stay with him. So, make that 308 something you actually want to use, with easily adjustable stock length for when you hunt together.

    Had similar with a T/C Contender. It has a switch on the hammer to select for rimfire or centerfire and it's possible to not engage fully. I think my daughter was a little tired of me by the third try. Fortunately this was on a young buck, not a gobbler. It was not as wary as it needed to be.
