    Weekend Libations

Curious about that black currant wine! I’ve been thinking about planting some black currants along a fence line. Now I have a better reason if it’s good!

    Replacing a boat floor

You’d be fine with 3/4 AC and coat it with epoxy resin on both sides. If you need more strength you could embed 6 oz fiberglass in the epoxy on top. I’d make sure the edges are sealed with a urethane caulk.

    West coast salmon recovery

I’m not quite following on the thought that pinks and chums don’t eat the same feed. Pinks and Chums eat smaller fish just like Kings and steelhead and Coho. It is sockeye that are plankton and krill eaters. The article is looking at the total numbers of formerly river fertilizer fish being...

Help out Public Lands in Montana!

I guess one philosophical question will be what you consider social media. My extent of social media is Hunt Talk and YouTube and I don’t have a Facebook account to take the quiz for what that’s worth. Hunt Talk and YouTube definitely have an occasional effect on overcrowding though. Designated...

    West coast salmon recovery

The history of the Bristol Bay sockeye runs is really fascinating. It helps having not only the prediction of the run, but then confirmation of the run size while the fish are still in the ocean and then monitoring of every tributary to count actual escapement before fishing takes place. It...

    West coast salmon recovery

The wild sockeye return for Bristol Bay is expected to be lower this year but still phenomenal compared to the Lower 48. They predict a 29 million fish harvest quota after allowing for escapement. I have not dove into why UW has that prediction this year. I worked on that survey program for a...

    West coast salmon recovery

I think you are on the right track. Beyond factory trawlers I think there is credible evidence that the State of Alaska pumping out hundreds of millions of pink and chum hatchery fish is causing a problem with Kings and Coho. The fact that the Alaska Chinook population has crashed as well as...

Mid Term Election - Zinke vs D TBD

A strong proponent of public lands and a strong proponent of the Beef country of origin labeling is a win in MT. Bummer about the Boundary waters mining support. We’ll see how he does when the chips are down with the US critical metals mining on the Bitterroot River in MT.

Meateater’s podcast this week on “Who will save the Columbia River’s Salmon” is well worth the listen. No easy answers.

    The Tax Man Cometh

I had it happen and lost some of a front quarter and a back strap on a buck while I made a 45 minute round trip to the truck for a cart. There were probably 25 magpies and crows in the trees around the site and they did a ton of damage quickly. Won’t happen again.

Review of NWRs and Fish Hatcheries

Yep—same with Orofino. Mandated for Dworshak dam construction and run by the Nez Perce tribe. There are another group of Idaho hatcheries in place because of the Hells Canyon dam complex blocking fish passage on the Snake.

Review of NWRs and Fish Hatcheries

In addition there a quite a few legally mandated hatcheries that were allowed in compensation for not installing fish ladders during dam design.

When to keep or replace a vehichle

A guy stopped by my jobsite the other day as part of a paving crew. He was nervous to shut off what was left of his 2008 Tundra because he thought it might not restart. It has 470,000 miles on it! It made me feel pretty good about my 2012 Tundra with only 156,000!
