I know there are good shots that can lead to a long recovery. But for my first animal, there is a sense of relief and gratitude for her going down less than 10 seconds after the shot.
You nailed it. Going out, covering what feels like hundreds of miles of ground, sometimes not seeing anything, and then the disappointment of coming home empty handed.
Not this time.😎
I move to Colorado 4 years ago. Didn’t grow up in an outdoors family. I wanted to provide wild game for my family and learn the sport of hunting. Many… many failures along the way. Learning solo on forums (like this), YouTube, and Facebook groups was how I tried to improve.
Thank you to...
Man that’s awesome, thanks for sharing all that. And congrats on the animal, I’m still waiting on that first big game animal.
What you said it what I will continue to adjust:
1. Take your time on the stalks. Slow down.
2. Slow WAY down when still hunting. I was increasing my encounters with...
Yep, archery hunting. I haven’t had favorable wind with a lot of my encounters, I know that has been a contributing factor. I also think I am moving too quick/covering too much ground. I feel like covering more ground is more productive, but I know bumping everything isn’t working either. Thanks...
Hey all,
I have my first mule deer tag and am a newish hunter (forums and YouTube have taught me everything). I hunted a unit for archery elk two years ago, and while there there were does that were in my camp most mornings when I got up, and would cruise into camp during lunch some times. They...
Today... Saw 4 cows and a calf moving between about 100 yards of aspen grove. Shot at a cow at 137 yards, perfectly still and broadside, when the shot went off the crosshairs where right where I wanted them. Shot felt great. I look up to see if she reacted, and elk are moving left and right...
I got some bulls in close, but I only had a cow tag. Was a cool experience to see the practice on my calling finally pay off, and know there were elk in the area, but didn’t get close to any cows.
I’d say my e-scouting for bear was successful for the alternate area. I found two creek areas...
Yeah I think getting the hide off and meat broken down quickly in the heat is what seems daunting solo as a first timer. I really want to do a good enough job on the bear to make a rug, if I get an elk down the hide is staying out in the field so I can do it quicker without worrying about...
Appreciate all this, great info!
I agree, it is a shame I can't find a mentor! But I did manage to recruit a buddy to go with me part of the season. It'll be his first season and he's got a muley tag. I only work 1 week out of all September and he's battling PTO shortage. Se we'll go a...
My thinking with elk v. bear spoilage, is the areas I elk hunt are 2k higher than the scrub oak areas I’ll be bear hunting. So the temp difference lower elevation will cut down my time. Also, skinning the bear hide with the precision for a rug seems tedious and difficult with one person...
Hey all,
I am a newer hunter, and have yet to harvest my first big game animal. My sources for learning are podcasts and YouTube.
I will have Colorado OTC archery elk and bear tags this September, and for part of the season I will be solo hunting. I want to prioritize my bear tag with habitat...
