    Favorite Edible Plants Of The Backcountry ?

    Huckleberries are my favorite, although I can't pass up a bush with ripe berries of any kind. I also enjoy morels and boletes. I'd like to start trying a few wild edible plants. Does anybody have any handbook reccommendations for field ID of plants in the western US or Sierra Nevada range?

    Looks like a good rain in NM

    Any news on precip in northern NM, Carson NF west of Tres Piedras or Santa Fe NF east of Santa Fe and Espanola? My wife got lucky and drew a couple tags in those areas

    Magdalena Mts

    BrianID summed it up well. I had a December cow hunt in the area last year and there was only a couple patches of snow lingering in shady spots and on the northerly aspects. Not enough to push deer to the lower elevations.

    Something you don't see every day!

    Wow that's pretty neat. Did you try fishing for them? I wonder if they would be aggressive and attack any lure thrown in their face since they are in spawning mode. Bet they would slash through anything besides a steel leader real quick.

    Break open your first aid kits for me

    Awesome thread, it reminds me I need to refill a few items in my kit and refresh myself on how to use the kit. One item that I don't think was mentioned yet is a glow stick in case you are immobilized and need to be located by a rescuer in the dark... makes a fail-safe option for a battery...

    New Mexico 6A late bow

    I hunted the muzzleloader season there last year, worked my butt off to get away from all those roads. But this wasn't because the elk don't hang out near roads in the unit. A lack of confidence in my calling ability motivated me to avoid other hunters :LOL:

    Drew archery deer in unit 53 and a late season cow elk tag. Can't wait for September!
