I just came home from a Colorado elk hunt and we saw lots of deer between 8,500 and 10,000 feet. There is really no snow to speak of up high. A lot of the bucks we saw were in the stunted aspen near the mountain peaks. If I were you I would not hesitate to head up high.
I hunt fairly near to where you will be going. If there is no or little snow, try to find a bench with a stream going through it at about 9,500 to 10,000 feet that also has good grass nearby. One of the most productive areas that we hunt has a series of beaver ponds/parks that the elk are always...
This is Griz. 50% Chocolate Lab, 50% GSP and 100% death on birds. Someone found him in a laundry basket by their mailbox when he was a puppy and brought him to a shelter. I got him when he was 10 weeks old.
He points upland birds, is a fantastic water retriever and will fetch a beer out of...
Moonrise in the Elkhead Mountains of Colorado. The photo was taken on opening day of the second rifle season 2013.
After twelve hours trudging through a few feet of snow I had a set of sore legs, a wet rear end, and a bull elk with my tag on it laying in the timber below the rockslide on the...

I thought about going to town to see if it was possible to buy a leftover bear tag after my encounter. Is it even possible to buy a tag in Colorado during the open season? This was during second rifle elk.
My father had a big bear track him in the snow on the same slope where my story...
Has anyone ever had issues with black bears getting into your kills? While I have seen bears many times while elk hunting in Colorado, I have only had one negative encounter over the years. I shot a bull late in the afternoon a long way from the truck. After gutting and skinning the bull and...
That's ok! I never said they had to bite the hook. :)
Check out how similar the tail fins are on the paddle fish and the sturgeon. They both kinda look like sharks without any teeth.
Post your biggest fish ever caught in fresh water.
Here is mine: lake sturgeon from the Rainy river on the Minnesota/Canada border.
This fish was 57 inches long.
