What weight merino for September elk?

I usually just bring a Smartwool long sleeve mid weight, probably 200 or so and then a short sleeve 150. Change into the short sleeve mid day if it gets too hot. The half zip FL aerowool shirt is nice too but it fits much more like a base layer as opposed to smartwool which seems to fit more...

Unit 10 wyoming deer thunder basis grasslands

If one was actually looking to shoot a whitetail buck, would 10 be a decent spot to look for one? I go up to WY to shoot muleys every year but have never killed a whitetail buck and was going to try that this year. I was thinking of going up to the Black Hills in the NE corner of the state but...

    1st timer

If there is less than a couple feet of snow on the ground, they will be up high in 4 in the NF area. Once it snows enough, a lot of them move down into unit 3 which could be oct-dec depending on snow. Have you considered 1st rifle at all? The weather and roads will be much more manageable (as...

What brand of food saver bags to use for elk meat

I've tried 5 different brands or so and I think the cabelas bags are my favorite. They feel the thickest and I haven't had many issues with them getting dinged up in the freezer. I'm using the Food Saver ones from costco at the moment, they're doing alright but I still prefer the Cabelas brand...

    Colorado whitetail

I shot a whitetail doe on a riverbottom at 8000 feet last year during archery in a NF west of I25. I've never tried the OTC whitetail tags out East though, seems like they'd be pretty tough. I was duck hunting on Jean K Tool SWA a couple years ago and saw some whitetails, not sure if that's...

    ...

Congrats on the buck! I'm curious about your water bladder setup with your SG pack. I have the same pack and just put my water bladder in the meat shelf area but haven't found a good way to keep it from sliding down. I noticed your bladder has a string tied to the cap, is the other end tied...

    Garmin inreach HuntView questions

Can't help with huntview, but a hot tip for your phone dying in cold weather is to make sure to keep it in your sleeping bag at night. I actually put all electronics with lithium batteries in my bag with me at night, cold weather sucks the life out of lithium like crazy. I carry my phone with...

Placing trail cameras for first time... advice?

I personally don't hang them high and angle them because I usually bolt a lock box to the tree (which is tough to do at an angle) and as long as your target area isn't super close to the camera, I typically get good full body shots. Definitely bring a knife or something to cut away all branches...

    Mt.zerkil wilderness

Nobody will give you a hard time for sleeping in your vehicle, just don't set up camp at a trailhead that's marked no camping and you'll be fine

    Looking for some advice.

I would go ahead and cross 371 off your list. There are definitely elk in there but its mostly high country and its going to snow all week making some of the trailheads potentially impossible to get to. I did see fresh tracks up there retrieving a trailcam last weekend but it was still up at...
