I was born there....hunted north of VAL D'OR before the roads were pushed thru..... end of the white man's road was WESWANIPI.
Cheers glenn

Up to Manawaki, then up to where the road comes to a T. Then left through the Provincial park. And I forget the mile marker, but after some drive, you took a right at the Canadian International Paper Company sign. You don’t go as far as Val D’or or the lodge. From there it was all dirt road to some logging camps and Lake Moore and Lake Oliva and Lake Capatausawan. That is spelled wrong. I did it three times. That Manawalki Hotel was nice. My spelling on some of these French names is not correct. It’s been so long ago I didn’t remember if it was Val D’or or D’or Val. But my dad used to go to some fishing lodge up at it. I do remember that they had to put a seal on my rifle at the entrance to the park and checked it when I left the park to make sure it wasn’t broken. No shooting within the Provincial Park.

Val D'Or = GOLD VALLEY....
My first wife was from Grand REMOUS=Big whirl pool. just before the park....my cousin was one of the head game wardens in La VEREDRIE PARK....
Maniwaki= mary's land.
fished all thru there.my f.i.l. had 550 acres on the river...
Couple well known lodges were BASKATONG and iirc le DOMAINE. Another was BENNY LALIGANS, but he was best known for his illegal bar and liquor sales lol...
thank you
Glenn

Good norning, ya, back when I was first married, that was just a little general store and a smaller gas station......back then ,the CREE lived in the bush...trappers....my grandparents on my wifes side lived in a real 2 room log shack in the bush /GRAND REMOUS....both in their 80s
they often went BUSH in the winter for days at a time...hunt moose ALL YEAR !!!
they had a big garden, up by the river on father in laws property, they loved leuttece, but so did the black bears......they had an old panel truck towed up by the garden...PAPERE=Grandfather, would stay in it and shoot any bear that rooted in garden....he also set out these terrible BIG bear traps...teeth were cut from checker plate bent and welded to the traps....damn, I hated those cruel things....hard life those folks.
Glenn
