Fresh Tracks Weekly - Conflicted Wildlife Trustees (Commissioners)

Example 3. Landowner doesn't get consideration for the elk he supports to the detriment of his business, closes his ranch to all hunting, all. I know several ranches in New Mexico that would have no hunting if it were not for the landowner voucher system. If the same number of tags were issued...

Fresh Tracks Weekly - Conflicted Wildlife Trustees (Commissioners)

Because most of what I am referring to takes place on National Forest, and both the USFS and the state of Idaho see the value in having outfitters available to provide reliable service for the public to enjoy public land, we try to preserve the tradition of backcountry use. You take away the...

It does to me having been in the business for 35 years. The introduction of wolves to Idaho in 1995 helped reduce our elk herd by 85%. This reduction came in the areas where most outfitters operated. We went from a thriving small business community to one just hanging on. Grocery stores closed...

Fresh Tracks Weekly - Conflicted Wildlife Trustees (Commissioners)

I spearheaded and paid the legal fees to draft, introduce and pass legislation in Idaho to the effect of outfitters and guides not needing to pay sales tax on consumables purchased to provide service where the service was charged sales tax bringing outfitting in line with ag and other...

If the outfitter just was able to keep all the money you would be right but that is not very insightful. He has to spend it in the community.

Hard to invest in what it takes to provide a quality, safe experience when you do not have a consistent customer base. Do you know why outfitters are allowed to work on BLM and USFS ground? Because those public land managers see the benefit of providing service to those members of the public who...

Fresh Tracks Weekly - Conflicted Wildlife Trustees (Commissioners)

Each non-resident hunter brings in many fold the economic impact than a resident non-outfitted hunter does. The outfitter does not sit on the dollars he charges but it goes to the community he operates in. The costs of 40 horses, several vehicles, guides, cooks, groceries, fuel, Forest Service...

You always stress the trustees should manage the resource for the benefit of the beneficiaries. I agree, but you often limit the beneficiaries to just hunters and not all citizens. Many citizens gain the most benefit by non-resident and outfitted/guided hunts. Why is there an outfitter set aside...

    Buying binos sucks

Most of you will think I am crazy, but I carry two binoculars while guiding. A Lecia 10 X 42 that I have used for over 20 years and a Zeiss 20 X 60 stabilized I have used for ranch hunts for the same time. I don't use the big pair on horseback pack in hunts as they are just to much and not...

    The Rinella Effect

I watch several shows but many I can't stomach. This is my 36th year guiding elk hunts so feel it is important to keep up with some things pertaining to western big game. I don't have TV so Youtube is my only venue. I haven't hunted big game for myself for years and I have a farm in Idaho with...

    FILM act

Outfitters do pay 3% of the hunt cost to the USFS or BLM plus 6% state sales tax here in Idaho. For a few years outfitters could be credited for the work they did on the forest- trail clearing, but that was short lived.

    Stoking the fire

I have been guiding hunts for 35 years and am all business when working. Hunting on my own though many times turns into aimless wandering, napping in the sun, staring off into the distance and watching the dogs enjoy themselves.
