She did well, the 1st year was a learning curve of the area, several close calls in archery, filled on opening day of rifle on a 5x5. The second year she arrowed a nice 6x7. I called him in to 38 yards, he came in hot. They are petty vocal there. Seems to get better mid September

We camped both years in a bumper pull. While there are not Tons of spots we did t have an issue getting a spot. Both of her ek were approx 1 mile walk from the truck, but after killed, able to get 4-wheeler close or pickup so the pack outs were easy

Nice, sounds like you the have elk dialed in. This is only time I will be hunting Wyoming, since I am 59, it took me 13 years for this tag. The local game warden said it is dry there this year so he expects the water holes to come into play. He said south portion of unit held more elk but was hunted harder do to easier terrain. He said north part of unit didn’t have as much hunting pressure but was rougher terrain.

If you don’t mind telling me, which part of the unit did you guys hunt. I am not looking for your secret spots but could you steer me in the right direction on any areas I should be starting out, or maybe more on point, is there any areas I should not spend a bunch of time in.

I am going to hunt archery sometime in mid a September and will hunt for 2 weeks. I will pull my bumper pull up for archery season and if I don’t pull, I will leave my camper in South Dakota at a buddies house amd come back for rifle season.

The info that game warden gave you is all correct, super dry this year. There are several springs in the unit that you will be able to focus time on. We spent the majority of our time on south portion as well. There was a tornado that went thru the area couple years back and knocked down quite a bit of timber from Cement Ridge south towards Schoolhouse.

The hunting wasn’t great thru the tornado zone the year it happened but may have improved since then. The roads and atv trails make “lazy” hunters hang around them, but getting off of them a bit will put you into them.

The timing that you are planning should be prime for rut. While the bulls are talking the 1st of sept, they don’t seem to be serious that early. The second year my wife drew, we planned on hunting the last 2 weeks, and 1st morning out, had him down by 7am and loaded up heading to meat locker before noon. Went back to work early and saved my vacation time.

Haha. Love it when a hunt works out like that although sometimes it is anticlimactic when it ends that suddenly. I sure appreciate all the help. It has helped me a lot getting my mind wrapped around the hunt.

Do you live in the area? I have a niece that lives in Sundance and my wife still has family in Beuleh Wy.
