School Me on Hunting In Grizz Country

Having about 30 other people with you seems to work well as a deterrent. The only grizzly encounters I’ve had were on JBER. Had one wonder into the next platoon’s patrol base at night, and another time had 2 younger males false charge us at the ammo point. Having a group of a few dozen...

    hydrogen power?

It’d be cool if this ever gains traction. I’m still holding out hope that there will be more makers following the Maverick trend and making smaller hybrid trucks (hopefully with a more conventional bed size). My wife & I are pretty set on getting a cab over/slide-in camper & truck, but I want...

    Handgun Turkey

That’s awesome lol. I just picked up a Rossi brawler, 45lc/410 single shot pistol, and I’ve been thinking it’d be fun to hunt a turkey with it. Due to the rifled barrel, the shot pattern really opens up past 10yds or so, so it’ll be a challenge! I figure I’ll just carry it while I’m hunting...

    Northern lights tonight

No, it’s still snowed in. We were told it doesn’t open until July 4th. Unrelatedly, I tried my hand at hunting some jackrabbits while we were there, too, but no luck this time.

    Northern lights tonight

My wife and I took a trip down to Steens Mountain, OR for our 10 yr anniversary. Just so happened to have been a great weekend to get away from everything!

    Suggestions for a quail gun?

Are you sure you’ll need more than 2 shots? I have very limited experience hunting quail, but my experience so far has been flushing 0-3 coveys, getting max 2 shots off on any one before they flit away forever. For the sheer joy of using it, I vote sxs

    Sell or Send back first?

I don’t use right handed bolt guns anymore. In this day and age, I just don’t see a reason why we LH shooters should settle for gear that isn’t as well suited as it could be. The downside, of course, is there’s lots of very cool models that are still RH only 😡. I’ve been very pleased with my LH...

King for a day, what would you do?

I’d mandate there be a public right of way to access every parcel of public land. No more landlocked public lands, no more need to worry about if corner crossing is legal. I’ve written my congressman and senators about this. Go figure, I didn’t even get a response from any of the 3.

    Henry’s 45/70

Have you had any issues with the stock cracking? I’ve read a few reviews where folks have had cracks develop on the straight grip single-shot stocks. Most of them sounded like the cracks developed pretty quickly, too. I’m hoping it might have just been a bad batch of wood, because those brass...

    Gettysburg

Hiked that one as well. I don’t remember all the details, but there were patches we got in the Boy Scouts for hiking these various battlefield trails. I think there were 2, maybe 3, at Gettysburg, and one for Antietem. Boy was it a doozy, though! IIRC it was about 12 miles in full sun on a hot...

House of Representatives votes to remove gray wolves from endangered species list

If wolves survived off of natural gas or oil, I bet there’d be a lot more people in power supporting open seasons.

    Gettysburg

I went several times as a kid. Growing up in NE OH it wasn’t a terribly long drive. It was always fun, but the true impact didn’t really sink in. During the early days of COVID I watched the full series of the guided virtual tour, and it had a way different impact as an adult. 300,000 men...

    What makes a "good" hunter?

These are the topics I love to see discussed. Ones that require self-reflection about what we want that to look like. For me, being a good hunter looks like 2 things, and you need to have both. 1) Ethics. Always stay within the confines of the law, to the letter. Above and beyond that, having...
