    MT-WTF did I see?

There was one of these in Jewel Basin a few years back. It took FWP about 20 minutes to send a helicopter to kill it.

How old is too old to hunt?

My dad is 90. He hunted every morning of the 2023 Idaho elk season on his farm (on foot). Then the day after the season closed he broke his hip changing a tire. And he has healed up pretty good so I'm not surprised if he's out there again come October. Even if not, that's a high mark to aim for.

    Stop Blaming Conservation Orgs

This^. Ben2 speaks smart. I always say, join a group that reflects your values. There are groups for about every possible niche. I don't care what group you join, just do something larger than yourself. Then have fun. But I have no time anymore for groups that tear each other down. I'm more...

Study: Hunters Die After Consuming CWD-Infected Venison

National Deer Assoc and biologists like Heffelfinger are casting skeptical shade on this report. https://deerassociation.com/nda-urges-deer-hunters-to-consider-new-cwd-report-with-caution/ BL

FWP Proposes Conservation Easement on Private Timberland in Northwest Montana

This easement is one of the few pieces of good news when it comes to access and habitat in NW MT. I've been here 30 years and can list dozens of places I used to hunt that are lost forever behind locked gates, gated communities, trophy homes, glamping resorts, strip malls and subdivisions...

    Journaling

I use a Rite in the Rain journal. But I will transcribe particularly memorable days on my laptop after I get home. My kill spreadsheet is on my laptop.

    A wolfs elk story

I get it that wolves and lions and bears eat elk that we would like to eat. And they need to be managed. But woods without 'em are a bit too boring for me. I'll eat the occasional tag for the privilege of hunting around four-leggeds who are so much better at it than I will ever be.

    Journaling

As a writer, I journal regularly, but have gaps that last several years. Honestly, I think it's the deadliest habit I have -- what dates were elk bugling, trout biting what flies, when were grayling or perch spawning, bears eating grass on what slopes in the spring? My memory sucks but it's...

    "Texas Heart Shot"???

I was teaching a hunter ed course to a bunch of 11 year olds this week. We were covering shot placement. I was just about to warn them against the THS, when I asked, "Any of your dad's from Texas?" A couple raised their hand. So I warned them against the Arkansas Heart Shot. Seemed safer than...
